Wounded Knee

I wanted to do justice to a people whose lives were affected by
My inspiration for Remember Wounded Knee comes from the snow covered banks of Wounded Knee Creek where nearly 300 Lakota men, women and children were massacred in a violent misunderstanding with the US Government. Remember
Because the horse was essential to the survival of the Plains Indians, I thought it was appropriate to use this pony figurine to portray the survivors of Wounded Knee Massacre. By changing the form of the pony to a mustang and adding a few items, I hope it takes you to a place where the bitter cold winds are at your back and the corners of your wool trade blanket curl forward as you make your way through the frozen, snow covered ground as those who did on that fateful day.
It was my hope when I created Remember Wounded Knee, that it would touch people as it did when I was making it. Each person will find their own meaning for this pony and the emotion they feel will be retrospective of this. I hope everyone that sees this pony comes away with their own unique and personal experience.

Wounded Knee
The Story Tag reads: On the frozen banks of Wounded Knee Creek, Lakota Chief Big Foot and his followers huddled together, hungry and exhausted. Driven off their lands, they surrendered and were surrounded by the U.S. 7th Calvary that had been ordered to peacefully escort them to a reservation. There was tension in the air. Troops feared the Sioux and the powerful Ghost Dances that spread through the Dakotas as the Indians frantically danced and prayed for the return of their way of life. A single shot rang out from a Calvary gun and chaos erupted. When the smoke cleared, peaceful Chief Big Foot and all of the Lakota lay dead in the snow. As the sun set on South Dakota, a single Native pony wandered the frozen plains in search of his beloved people that would dance no more.
This Iowa artist postponed a career in the arts to raise a family, but has found her passion for painting rekindled with The Trail of Painted Ponies. "Wounded Knee" won first place in the Paint Your Own Pony contest held at the International Museum of the Horse in Lexington, Kentucky in July of 2007.

EMBELLISHED WOUNED KNEE FIGURINE
I have embellished Wounded Knee to give you a figurine that is as close to the original as possible. I have taken the snow off the legs, mane and tail and repainted them. I have added grass on the base and finally added the original snow back to the pony and resealed with a protective acrylic matte finish. The base is signed underneath with my signature and the inscription of “Wokiksuye Cankpe Opi”, that means Remember Wounded Knee in Sioux. The box and tag will have signatures also.
